Laguna Niguel sits on what used to be a land grant from a Mexican citizen. After the state was founded, the property was fought for untill a drought wiped out his resources. A few years later another company bought the land and several acres of land in the area and started to develop the city.

A group of investors began building what would be another master planned community in South Orange County. The city was founded in 1989 becoming the 29th city in Orange County.
